Vietnam – Day 0/1 – Travel/Hanoi

Long travel day! I flew 15.5 hours to Seoul and then 5 hours to Hanoi. Thankfully I was able to sleep most of the flights. Korean Airlines feeds you a lot too, so it was food then sleep then food then sleep then food then sleep.

Landed in Seoul and I was feeling a bit triumphant! Even though I hadn’t made it to Vietnam yet, I was very happy with myself. I doing it. I’m out of the United States, stepping outside of the box, and traveling (temporarily) by myself .

Landed in Hanoi and Kat was waiting for me! We already had transportation arranged to take us to our hotel. We showered up and set out to grab a bite to eat and explore for a couple hours.

The streets are so crazy crowded with lots of motor bikes. And all the local stores are very tiny and spread out onto the side walks so there is little room to walk. The kitchens for the restaurants are right there on the edge of sidewalk.

Now, the best part of the day: street food tour!!🤤

Bánh cuốn : Rice roll with pork and mushroom inside (vegetarian for Kat 🙂 )
Bánh rán : similar to a sweet donut hole but made of rice with a gooey center
Chả rươi : fried pancake with sandworm and pork (sandworm is very rare and more expensive and is found under water. The pancakes had 20% worm and the rest pork.
Bún chả : warm soup made of water, sugar, fish sauce with pork, carrots, and green papaya then add in vermicelli noodles
Nộm bò khô : papaya salad with dried beef
Nem Nướng Nha Trang : Build your own spring rolls!
This was my favorite!
Cafe trứng : coffee with egg cream

The food was so so good and we were so so full after that! Our tour guide was great and we learned so much about the food and the way of life! Turns out there is no age requirement for buying or drinking alcohol. We also learned the police can be bribed or persuaded and you can negotiate a ticket price down.

Excellent start to the strip. I definitely think a food tour on the first day is the way to go! It also (hopefully) broke down the barriers for ordering street food as it can feel intimidating.
