Thailand – Day 1 – Bangkok

AHH what a great day to start the trip! Started with no real plan for the day, just knew we had to make it across town to see The Grand Palace, so we set off foot for an 80 min walk… because you never know what you’ll find. Well, an 80 min walk turned into a 2 hour walk because I made one wrong turn! But it’s an adventure so we got to explore !

5 miles later😅, and we were almost there and a kind local lady stopped to talk to us and asked where we were going and through that she told us the palace was closed for prayer and we had to wait until 1:30. So with a couple hours to spare, she hailed us a tuk tuk and recommended we take a 1 hr long boat tour to see an area we wouldn’t normally get to.

I don’t sweat much but I was definitely a tomato all day
So interesting to see how people live! Life is so different here and I always feel like I’m learning something new.

After out boat tour, the organizer recommended we take a tuk tuk away from the city center to another temple and then he would take us to The Grand Palace. So off we went!

The Temple of the Emerald Buddha is the most sacred temple in all of Thailand. The detailing was just incredible! Like nothing I’ve seen before, especially with all the tiny mirror pieces.

The Grand Palace : the former royal residence

Then got trapped in the rain towards the end of our time here. Time for a snack and to wait it out a little!

Once it finally lightened up, we made our way to the metro to head to our next meeting point for a street food tour! Look at how clean and safe the train it – New York could never

Now to my favorite part of the scheduled programming – FOOD! (On a tuk tuk😝)

Just like cash cab 😂

Our guide hasn’t sent me the list of places and dishes from the tour yet so I will update here when that’s done! But for now enjoy!

Khao Soy Lam Duan Faham – wheat noodle with curry soup with drumstick (this was my favorite of the night! Also was the perfect amount of spicy!)
Yum Pla Duke Foo – fluffy catfish served with mango salad. The crunchy thing was the fried catfish and then you take a piece of that with some peanuts and the mango salad on top. Also one of my favorites!
Yum Kor Moo Yang, Tom Zabb, Labb, Som Tum – Pork shoulder salad, hot and sour soup, minced chicken salad, papaya salad
This restaurant is in the Michelin guide and is literally located in an alley!
Guayteaw Aob Gai – stir fry noodle with poached egg
Guayteaw Kour Gai – stir fry noodle with scrambled egg

This next part of the tour we got off in Chinatown and walked to some stalls on the street.

Khao Neaw Mamuang – Mango sticky rice!! I’ve been wanting this since the second I landed!
Patong Go go sang kha ya – Chinese doughnut with pandan custard
Knom Baeng – Thai sweet crispy crepe
Kanom Bhabin – Thai style coconut pancake
Trying mangosteen for the first time!

The final part of the tour we went to a rooftop bar to enjoy a drink and a view!

Wat Arun

Such a lovely first day, and my stomach was very happy!! In my opinion, one of the best ways to get to know a country and a culture is through their food!

Stay tuned for more! ❤
