Day 1 – UK – Glasgow

Welcome back to another Shelby travel blog!! Glad you’re here! 😁

But first, short pit stop in Iceland for a layover.

For those of you who may not know, this first leg of the trip is to see my longest and dearest friend Rob!!! Rob and I have been besties since 8th grade… going on 14 years. And he is getting his Masters at University of Glasgow right now. So before hopping over to London, I thought it would be perfect to make a little detour to see Glasgow and see an old friend.

First stop: lunch! Glasgow has a lot of Japanese/chicken katsu (according to my expert tour guide 😝… no idea why tho lol) so stopped for a quick bite before lots of walking.

Since we only had about half a day, today’s goal was to see the highlights of the East End of Glasgow.

We made our way east walking on Sauchiehall St, the main drag near Rob’s flat.

Strathclyde University

Love to see the older buildings with the black soot, similar to Edinburgh, as it boomed during the industrial era. giving it a moody feel.

Glasgow Cathedral
Glasgow Necropolis

The idea of walking through a cemetery for fun can seem odd… but there’s a beauty to it, with the flowers and the stories and the view for this one in particular. We just don’t really have this kind of stuff back home that goes so far back… or at least not that common.

Just for you moms (Amy & Anne) 😘
The Barras: a working class neighborhood, designated by the river nearby. Especially during the industrial era , people living in this neighborhood would build ships on the river and then further down the river is where the more wealthy people lived that owned those ships and would sail them off at sea.
Glasgow Green
Tell me this doesn’t look like Google….
Duke of Wellington statue

According to Rob, this is THE thing to see in Glasgow. A cone has been placed on this statue since the 1980s, and even has its own instagram page that people follow in the scenario the cone falls off! 😂

Drinks stop at Wetherspoons! This is a staple cheap eats and drinks spot in the UK with almost 500 locations. They take old buildings and restore them. This location specifically is in an old bank.

Last but not least, Rob gifted me a ticket to see a performance at the Kings Theatre. This was a joint performance from West End stars: Kerrie Ellis, Louie Dearman, and Rachel Tucker. All three ladies have played Elphaba on the West End and many other roles. Fun way to end the night with lots of love for musical theatre.
