Turkey – Day 1 – Istanbul

Hi hi, welcome back! I am off to Tunisia for a guided hiking trip in the desert. Something totally different than anything I’ve done before, so you’re in for a treat!

First things first… I opted for a 9 hour layover in Istanbul. Just a little sneak peak at the country as I will most definitely be back!

And if you’ve been reading for a while… you know one of my favorite things to do in a new place is eat! And I had just enough time for a food tour.

I had to book a private tour because the times for the group tours were too late in the day to work for me. My guide, Kaan, was so lovely. He’s finishing up his late year at college and grew up in Istanbul as well. He helped pick the locations of the tour and said the food is not the most common touristy food but rather options that are more authentic and eaten by the locals.

First stop: gozleme  – Turkish quesadilla . He said this is something grandmas would make and reminds him of his family. As well as black tea. They have about 8 of these cups of tea a day. That’s like their water, especially when it’s cold out.

On to the ferry! So Istanbul sits in both Europe and Asia and it’s divided by the Bosphorus Sea. So here we started on the Europe side and took the ferry to the Asia side.

We even saw some dolphins on our way!
Midye (stuffed mussels)
Balik durum (fish wrap) – with Mackeral
icli kofte (stuffed meatball) and Ayran (salty yogurt drink)
Lahmacun (Turkish pizza) . You out the toppings in it and roll it up to eat

Was so happy we got to walk through a market!! Lots of olives and spices!

Islak hamburger – Wet burger is what he called it. It’s constantly steamed and soaked in tomato sauce. He said this is their drunk food lol. Tasted like goulash in burger form
Cold Baklava with cream and pistachio one with Turkish tea

Then to head back to the Europe side.

I had no idea how hilly it was!
Galata Tower
Pretty great view to end my short time in Istanbul.

Then back to the airport to catch a short flight to Tunis. Which was delayed a couple hours…. And I finally made it to my hotel at 2am Saturday… sooo about a 30 hour day.

Aanddddd I’ve got one full day in Tunis before meeting up with the group tomorrow! Stay tuned!
