First day of hiking!!

This was the view from our guesthouse where we are staying. Last night we arrived in the dark so this was a nice surprise to wake up to!

The entrance of the guesthouse area

Today we were off to hike for 4ish hours and visit 3 different villages. Majority of which are no abandoned. We are in the Dahar mountains region in South Tunisia.

First one being the village we are staying in: Douiret

Not sure how well you can see but there is a path straight across this image that has tons of houses built into the mountain, similar to what we are staying in but these aren’t inhabited anymore.
This is an olive oil mill. A camel could be hooked up the this stone roller to crush the olives that would later go into a press in the room nearby.

Now came the trek between village 1 and 2. Being about 3.5 hours.

Stumbled upon some shepards with donkeys, sheep, goats… and a couple dogs!

Stop 2: Chenini, where we also stopped for lunch

Stop 3: Guermessa

This landscape is just something I’ve never seen before. Truly walking for hours without seeing anyone around and in the heat and sand/dirt. It all looks like something out of Star Wars…. Which they have filmed parts of in the surrounding area.

Popped back on the bus to go back the where we are staying. This is a view from afar.

Better picture of the “guesthouse” aka caves in the rock where each room is

And dinner! Before dinner we all spent some time cleaning up for the night, reading a bit, and chatting over some Tunisian wine.

We have one more night where we are at now and then off to hike tomorrow and on to a new guesthouse!! Stay tuned!
